Demantoid with Horsetail Inclusions

The horsetail is a spray of fine chrysotile fibres radiating from a chromite crystal inside the stone. It is the classic origin marker of demantoid from the Ural Mountains, and it is read with a loupe rather than from a laboratory report.

In this material the inclusion counts as a feature rather than a flaw: what collectors look for is a well-formed, well-centred horsetail. Every stone on this page is graded as carrying one, and each listing has its own photograph.
